Jarryd Hayne - Complicated or Misunderstood? - By Hayley

There seems to be a division of opinion when it comes to Jarryd Hayne. You either love him or hate him. To some people he can do no wrong and to others he can never do anything right. By the end of this post you will have figured out which category I fit into.

I hear people say that Jarryd is a complicated person, he’s arrogant and rude. I actually think he’s misunderstood. He’s not actually that complicated if you think about it, the media just make him out to be a complicated person. There have been numerous conversations in the media about what makes Jarryd Hayne ‘click’. I would like you to ask yourself this question…

Does Jarryd Hayne firing make Parramatta play well or does Parramatta firing make Jarryd Hayne play well?

It’s like a chicken and egg scenario.

There’s no denying 2009 was an outstanding year for Jarryd Hayne and Parramatta. Why can’t he produce that type of performance every week? I think the answer is quite simple. There’s a general rule in NRL that if the forwards aren’t getting the metres, the playmakers can’t do their thing. Everyone seems to forget this when it comes to Jarryd and he seems to get the blame for not getting into games to help us win. As amazing as 2009 was, it seems to have created an opinion that he can win games on his own. I sense the current playing group have this same opinion and are just waiting around for him to come up with the game changer. Yes, he can win games; he just needs the whole team to do their bit also. His 2009 form was on the back of good form from everyone in that team.

Parramatta are also playing a different style of football to 2009. The ad lib style with plenty of offloads suits Jarryd better because he can use his explosive speed to get through the broken defence.

Another point to think about is that other teams have built their defence around stopping Jarryd which also makes things harder for him. If you look back on 2009 footage, when Jarryd got the ball other teams would come to a standstill waiting to see what Jarryd did. Teams have now learnt how to defend against him so he has less of those ‘Simply Dancing’ moments as Rabs best described it. He's now setting up tries more than scoring them, his game has changed over the years; people just don't notice that as much. A bigger build to 2009 makes him less agile now too.

One thing you can't deny is that Jarryd brings a level of confidence to the Parramatta side that is definitely noticable when he's not there. There is no doubt he is a superstar and his game is constantly evolving. Since becoming captain he has stepped up to a new level. People just can't seem to see past their hate for him. When Parramatta are going good everyone believes it's all because of Jarryd and when they are going bad everyone has the point of view it's because Jarryd didn't get involved enough. As much as he'd like to be able to, he can't do it all; the whole team needs to step up.

If you haven't already guessed, my opinion is that Parramatta firing makes Jarryd Hayne play well. People ask why he always steps up for Origin. Just have a look at the calibre of player he’s playing with. He’s playing with the best of the best. Jarryd can only play as well as the team will allow him to. I'm not trying to take away from the brilliance of Jarryd Hayne, he definitely wins Parramatta games; I'm just trying to make people see that it's not his fault when Parramatta lose. His performances aren't inconsistent, the teams are.

In regards to being arrogant, I think he’s just shy. Sometimes it’s easy for shyness to come off as arrogance. I know I would find it hard to have conversations and be all chirpy with people I didn’t know.

Finally, if you’re one of the people who think he’s rude put yourself in his position. If he stops for one photo or one signature he could be stuck there for hours. I see people try and stop him before a game and then get annoyed that he signs things whilst walking. He needs to be in those sheds by a certain time, he doesn’t have time to stand outside for an hour whilst signing autographs and getting photos. There are times when he spends the time signing autographs and having photos with fans, it’s just not always the right time.

Love,
